In an engineering event held at the Liberal Democrat party conference, MP Vince Cable said that the government should promote and prioritize engineering industry, as engineering jobs play a vital role in UK economy. He said that "The role of government should be to do those things that the private sector does not do, such as ensuring that there are enough young people studying maths and science”. He’s of the opinion that the government could secure the future of science and engineering in the UK by making sure that there were enough qualified professionals at all levels to teach students.
Cable’s opinion sounds very solid, as the sped up engineering recruitment in the country is clearly showing the bright future of the field. Enough efforts have been made to the engineering sector by the government, but since there’s always a room for improvement, so is the case with engineering field. The government currently runs Young Engineers clubs in UK schools, designed to spark interest in engineering from Britain's youngsters, and, according to statistics from March 2008, 35 per cent of club members are girls, which is very healthy sign too.
Recession has affected almost all sectors, but engineering is relatively less affected. This is one major reason for the constant growth of the sector in the past, but to make it more stable in future, constant efforts are needed too.
